Janet Bratcher

Artist Statement:

I am a self-taught artist. I am motivated by self- teaching, and there is no better way to learn than to figure things out on your own. I am finally at a point in my life where I would like to turn my passion into more than just a hobby seen only by my family and friends.

As long as I can remember I have been interested in the avenues of creativity. I have journeyed down many of these paths from painting, sculpture, quilting, beading and needlepoint. After years of picking up and losing interest in different mediums and craft projects, I finally feel I have found an art form that engages me. I found a style of my own. My style is inspired by the traditional impressionists.

My medium of choice is oils pastels and India ink. I have a good eye for detail and love to show great textures and colors. I like to work in stages, starting by breaking up the surface into large general shapes and values keeping the painting abstract. This gives me a basic road map. I keep my attention on the entire surface and try not to get too picky on any single area.

    David Caywood

    Artist Statement:

Growing up in Moberly, MO in the 70’s, my father, Stanley Caywood held the position of art professor at the Moberly Area Junior College. It was the admiration of my father and the fact that I was surrounded by art and art history boos that influenced me to become an artist.

I feel my work is representative of my many moods and interests. Architecture and competitive sports are common themes in my paintings. I attempt to compose images with volume, solidity, and depth. Sometimes choosing to work above the picture plane to draw the viewer into the piece.

      John Michael Holman

      Artist Statement:

The portrait/landscape/narrative has been a familiar subject within my history of painting. The process of creating and methodology allows me to develop each piece individually. It also brings me the most satisfaction; even if considered imperfect or slightly awkward in technique by academic standards. Being a self-taught artist has its rewards and allows me the freedom to go outside the lines and paint what I feel and see without restraint.

My more visceral works are achieved through the application of metallic paints plus the occasional intervention of the ‘happy accident’ or chance. All these elements contribute in the process of making or de-constructing my paintings. The creative process for me is one of release, provocation and ultimately my way of expressing my memories of places visited and the emotional attachments that accompany them.

This is more apparent as the viewer approaches the completed works; with surfaces dissolving into a color pallet of irregular textures and unconscious imagery. From an academic perspective, I break rules and as a self-taught artist I am completely at peace with that concept. I paint what I feel and if it provokes the viewer with any reaction whether good or bad; then I have done my job.

Thank you for viewing my creations. John Michael Holman
