National Designation Celebrates MACC’s Commitment to Access, Student Success, and Economic Mobility
Moberly Area Community College (MACC) has received national recognition as an Opportunity College and University – Higher Access, Higher Earnings, a prestigious new designation from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the American Council on Education (ACE).
Announced on April 24, 2025, the updated Carnegie Classifications of Institutions of Higher Education highlight colleges and universities that offer broad access to education and deliver strong economic outcomes for their graduates—especially students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
Out of more than 5,900 Title IV postsecondary institutions across the United States, MACC is one of only 479 colleges and universities to earn this distinction.
“This designation is more than just a title—it’s a powerful affirmation of the work we do every day,” said MACC President Todd Martin. “In an age when the value of higher education is often questioned, this recognition validates what our faculty, staff, students, and alumni already know: MACC changes lives.”
What the Designation Means
This new classification is part of an effort to create more accurate benchmarks for higher education institutions and support meaningful comparisons between peers. It reinforces the vital role community colleges like MACC play in serving students and strengthening communities. According to the Carnegie Foundation and ACE, Opportunity Colleges:
- Provide broad access to higher education
- Support strong workforce outcomes and high earnings after graduation
- Promote social mobility through student success
- Serve as engines of equity and opportunity in their regions
Reflecting MACC’s Mission and Vision
This recognition aligns directly with MACC’s mission and it supports the college’s broader vision:
Mission: MACC provides dynamic and accessible educational opportunities that empower our students and enrich our communities.
Vision: MACC strives to be an institution of choice known for academic excellence, student success, innovation, and responsiveness to community and workforce needs.
Through this designation, MACC is being celebrated not just for what it offers in the classroom, but for the long-term value it delivers in the real world. It’s a reminder that higher education is still one of the most effective tools for building brighter futures—and that community colleges are leading the way.
