The Moberly Area Community College Foundation is pleased to announce the establishment of the MACC Student Emergency Fund, a new resource designed to help students overcome unexpected financial hardships that could otherwise interrupt their education.
The fund was launched through a generous $10,000 gift from Doug and Rae Nickell of Springfield, Missouri, dedicated specifically to supporting students identified as first-generation college students. The donors’ investment also inspired the establishment of a $25,000 endowed Student Emergency Fund, creating a foundation for ongoing support of MACC students facing emergency situations.
First-generation college students are often navigating higher education without the benefit of family members who have previously experienced college. While these students bring extraordinary determination and resilience to their educational journeys, unexpected financial setbacks can create significant obstacles to their success.
The Student Emergency Fund will provide assistance to students facing unforeseen emergencies that threaten their ability to remain enrolled and continue their studies. Assistance may help address needs such as transportation challenges, emergency housing situations, utility expenses, childcare needs, medical emergencies, or other unexpected financial hardships.
“The generous gift from the Nickell family reflects a deeply held belief in both the value of a college education and the potential of students who are the first in their families to attend,” said Dr. Patti Cole, Physical Science Faculty member and R1SE First-Generation Coordinator. “When balancing a full academic course load with other family and/or work responsibilities, an unexpected financial hardship can quickly become a barrier to completion for many of our students. We all need a little help sometimes, and this new fund will provide us with the opportunity to help students facing an unexpected financial hardship persevere and continue working toward their academic goals.”
The MACC Student Emergency Fund recognizes that student success is about more than academics. When students face an unexpected crisis, timely support can make the difference between staying enrolled and stepping away from college.
“First-generation students are often trailblazers for their families,” said MACC President Todd Martin. “They are pursuing education not only to improve their own lives but to create opportunities for future generations. We are grateful for this thoughtful gift and the message it sends to our students: when challenges arise, they do not have to face them alone.”
The Foundation anticipates that the fund will help remove barriers that can derail educational progress and provide students with the support they need to remain focused on completing their degrees and certificates. Community members who wish to support the Student Emergency Fund may make contributions through the MACC Foundation.
