Zoom is the virtual classroom and meeting platform used by MACC to deliver virtual class sessions, host meetings, and provide one-on-one support for students, faculty, and staff.
For the best experience…
- Join on a desktop or laptop computer that meets or exceeds MACC’s Technology Recommendations.
- Connect over a strong, reliable internet connection (bandwidth) – recommend between 3.0 Mbps and 4.0 Mbps.
- Use a headset with a microphone. This will let you hear and be heard more clearly. Headsets are sold at the Greyhound Store at all campus locations.
Students
You do not need to be logged into a Zoom account to participate in virtual meetings. Basic directions and tips to prepare for, join, and participate in virtual learning and meetings are provided in the tabs below.
Be Prepared
- Set up a professional learning space that is free from distractions. This space should allow you to give your undivided attention to the instructor and engage with others during class similar to what would be expected in an on-campus class setting.
- Know when your class meetings start. This information can be found by clicking “My Schedule” in myMACC and in the instructor’s syllabus in Canvas.
- Read the directions provided by your instructor in the Canvas course to become familiar with how to join and what to do if you have technical difficulties.
- Get up and be ready before the class start time. Dress as you would for an in-seat course on campus.
Join a Virtual Class
- Approximately 5 to 10 minutes before the class start time join with the link provided in the course in Canvas. This helps you be on time (or a little early) just as you would for an in-seat course.
- Follow the prompts to download the Zoom launcher (if it does not start automatically) or click “join from browser” if you are unable to download the launcher.
- Select “join with audio” and test your audio before class begins. In lower left corner of the meeting room, click the Chevron next to “Mute” and choose “Test Speaker and Microphone”.
- Test your webcam/camera as needed. In lower left corner of the meeting room, click the Chevron next to “Start Video” or “Stop Video” to view and adjust video settings.
During Class
- Turn on your camera if asked by your instructor. Look at your camera when talking in order to make eye contact with your instructor and classmates.
- Mute (lower left corner) your microphone when you aren’t talking during class. This will help to eliminate background noise that could distract others.
- Use the “Chat” feature to interact with your instructor and classmates when appropriate.
- Be sure to participate in any “Polls” or “Breakout Rooms”.
- You have tools to “Raise Hand”, “Yes”, “No”, and “Clap” in the bottom right corner to interact. Use them as instructed.
Be Prepared
- Go to a place free from distractions where you can engage with the meeting host through screen sharing, chat, and other tools as needed during the meeting. For your personal safety and the safety of others around you, DO NOT join virtual meetings while driving or engaging in other similar activities that require undivided attention.
- Get up and be ready before the meeting start time. Dress as you would for a face-to-face meeting.
- Make sure you have the resources you want share with the meeting host. This includes a photo ID which is required for advising appointments.
Join a Virtual Meeting
- Find and click on the invitation (join) link provided by the meeting host. In most cases, this link will be sent by email when you scheduled the meeting or within 24 hours before the meeting.
- Join approximately 5 to 10 minutes before the meeting start time. This helps you be on time (or a little early) just as you would for a face-to-face meeting.
- Have all items that you need/want to share during the meeting with you, including your state-issued ID or passport.
- Download the Zoom launcher if it does not start automatically. You may click “join from browser” if you are unable to download.
