Respondus LockDown Browser

Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) with or without Respondus Monitor is used to provide a remote proctoring option when proctored exams are required in an online course.  It may also be used to assist with proctored exams given in on-campus or virtual courses.

What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

Respondus LockDown Browser (LDB) is a custom browser that locks down the testing environment in Canvas. When students use LDB to access a quiz or exam, they are unable to print, copy, visit other websites, access other applications, or close a quiz until it is submitted for grading.  The quiz/exam title ends in “…Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser” when LDB is enabled on the quiz/exam.

What is Respondus Monitor?

Respondus Monitor is enabled in Respondus LockDown Browser to provide remote proctoring when proctored exams are required in an online course.  Students use their webcam to record themselves (audio and video) during the exam.   Afterwards, proctoring information is available for the instructor to review and, if needed, discuss with the student.    The quiz/exam title ends in “…Requires Respondus Lockdown Browser + Webcam” when Respondus LockDown Browser with Monitor is enabled on the quiz/exam.

What is Pearson LockDown Browser?

This is a special version of Respondus LockDown Browser with Respondus Monitor used only in some online math classes.  It allows students to take online proctored exams through Pearson’s MyMath Lab in Canvas.  Specific directions and practice quizzes for this special version of LDB are in the math courses where it is required.

Get Started

During the first week of the semester, log into Canvas and navigate to the Modules section in each of your courses. When LockDown Browser (LDB) is required, MACC’s LockDown Browser installation link and course-specific directions will be provided in Modules.  It is important to read and follow course-specific directions and complete all practice quizzes provided.

How do I install LockDown Browser and start a practice quiz?

Use the MACC’s Lockdown Browser (LDB) installation link provided in the course in Canvas.  This link is visible when you click “Start Quiz” on any quiz/exam with LDB attached.  Lockdown Browser only needs to be installed once.

How to start a quiz with LDB may be different in each courses.  So, it is important to read and follow course-specific directions and complete all practice quizzes during the first week of class.  In general, you will either click the LockDown Browser icon installed on your computer to log into LDB and start the quiz/exam, or LDB will automatically launch when you click “start quiz” in any browser.

What hardware do I need?
  1. A dedicated broadband internet connection with a strong/reliable signal is essential during timed tests.  Connecting via an ethernet cable, disconnecting other devices, and not using “bandwidth-hungry” services (such as video  streaming or gaming) while taking an exam are recommended to optimize connectivity.  See additional tips provided by Respondus.
  2. A laptop or desktop computer that meets or exceeds MACC’s Technology Recommendations.
  3. A USB plugin webcam (or built in camera) with a microphone is required for video and audio monitoring during the exam.

Support

Review the frequently asked questions below and follow MACC’s basic technology troubleshooting tips for LockDown Browser.

Can LockDown Browser be used on a Chromebook?

Yes, but its not recommended.  We cannot guarantee that LockDown Browser  will consistently work on a Chromebook in all college courses.

Chromebooks are not fully supported by Respondus at the higher education level and there are known issues/limitations.  Some courses/subject areas may have more limitations than others or not allow the use of Chromebooks at all due to these limitations.

Can LockDown Browser be use on an iPad?

iPad use is not a standard option for all exams that require LockDown Browser.  It is only possible to use LockDown Browser on an iPad for specific exams when iPad use is enabled by the instructor.  For more information, view the iPad Support document by Respondus and contact MACC’s Instructional Technology department with your questions.

I've installed LockDown Browser. Why do I still see the download link when I start a quiz?

In some courses this is to be expected because you are logged into Canvas through another browser (e.g. Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Edge).

Close the browser if LDB doesn’t automatically launch after you click the “start quiz” button.  Then, find and double click the “Lockdown Browser” icon on your desktop (PC users) or Applications folder (Mac users) to log back into Canvas and start the quiz/exam.

Why am I getting a "spinning wheel" during the webcam check?

Most likely this is due to another program running in the background or privacy/security setting on your device that are preventing LockDown Browser from activating the camera on the computer used to take the exam.  Follow the directions by Respondus to check and update your computer privacy settings.

What if my camera cannot be detected or configured?

This could caused by internet connectivity issues, your computer settings, or a LockDown Browser installation error.  Follow the webcam troubleshooting steps by Respondus, submit a ticket directly to Respondus, or contact MACC’s Instructional Technology department for further assistance.

Not seeing what you need?  Contact MACC’s Instructional Technology department and/or Respondus Student Support for one-on-one assistance and troubleshooting.
