Turnitin is a group of software solutions that promote academic integrity and provide feedback to help students improve their writing.
In Canvas
Turnitin checks a submission for similarity to other papers and content that may have been copied into assignments from other sources and provides the results in a Turnitin Similarity Report. How to access this report, feedback, and grades will depend on how the instructor sets up the assignment. Look in your individual course(s) for specific directions provided by your instructor and review the general directions below.
Turnitin assignments are submitted as a Canvas file upload or text box submission type assignment except that you will need to check Turnitin’s “I agree” statement before submitting the assignment.
- Click the “red” Canvas assignment submission button at the top right of the assignment page
- Upload the file from your local computer or add text in the text box submission window
- Click the box next to the Turnitin “I agree” statement to add a checkmark and agree.
- Select “Submit Assignment”
- Go to Grades and click the assignment title. This opens the Canvas assignment submission details page.
- Click the % symbol to open Turnitin’s Similarity Report in a separate window.
What file types can I upload for a Turnitin Assignment? Turnitin accepts a variety of file types. Instructors may further restrict the file types allowed, so check each Canvas assignment for acceptable file types.
How do I learn more about the Similarity Report?
Go to Turnitin’s Student Guide and click the links under the “Similarity Report” and “Grammar Tool” sections.
Can I resubmit an assignment to Turnitin?
Resubmissions are only possible if your instructor has activated this option on that assignment. In some cases resubmitting will overwrite your original submission. Normally, you are allowed three resubmission attempts where the Similarity Report will generate immediately. After three attempts, you’ll have to wait 24 hours before a new Similarity Report can be generated.
