Purpose
The purpose of the Music Department at MACC is to help students develop an appreciation of music, to teach students to analyze and evaluate music in terms of historical and cultural aspects, and to offer instruction in piano and vocal performance skills. The Music Department offers an array of courses that meet the Humanities requirement of the Associate of Arts degree, count as an elective, or serve as future credit towards a four-year music degree. Music courses are for the general student as well as the student wishing to pursue music as a vocation. These courses prepare students with the basic music skills needed to complete their bachelor’s degree at a four-year college or university in areas such as vocal performance, education, music therapy, music technology, and other areas of the music industry.
Skills Taught/Benefits
Music courses help students develop aesthetic appreciation, gain insight into the finer elements of the human condition, develop analytical thinking skills, and grow into a well-rounded individual. Small classes allow individualized instruction, and enthusiastic, highly-trained instructors help students pursue their passion for music. Performance courses encourage creative expression and the development of self-confidence.
Cultural Enrichment
Through in-class listening activities, concert attendance, and exposure to diverse styles, students completing Music courses, such as Music Appreciation, History of Rock and Roll, Music of America, and World Music, broaden their awareness of the cultural aspects of music. Additionally, the Music Department occasionally arranges short, study-abroad courses. Past study abroad courses have included travel to France, Spain, Morocco, Greece, Italy, Austria/Germany/Switzerland, and England.
Vocal Music Award
Vocal Music Awards are awarded on a competitive basis upon the recommendation of the MACC Music Director. To be eligible for the award, students must audition and enroll in the vocal music program and actively participate as instructed by the Music Director. The number and amount of individual awards may vary, and will be determined by the needs of the Vocal Music Department, ranging from $250 to $1,500; a maximum of $15,000 per semester may be awarded to all recipients. This award is applied to educational expenses charged at MACC, including fees, tuition, lab fees, housing, meal plan, and/or books and supplies. Scholarship recipients must be enrolled in a minimum of twelve credit hours per semester. This scholarship is renewable for one consecutive semester if a cumulative 2.0 grade point average is maintained each semester and 12 credit hours are completed. The award will be prorated if the recipient fails to abide by the rules and regulations of the scholarship or the College. Student recipients of this award may reapply in subsequent years
Transfer Opportunities
Students can complete Music courses within their Associate of Arts degree, which is transferable to four-year colleges and universities. The MACC Music curriculum provides a basic foundation in music as well as the opportunity to participate in a collegiate choir or even private study to advance vocal and piano skills. Students can complete Music courses each semester while at MACC and then transfer for further study in the discipline. Many of Missouri’s four-year institutions offer bachelor degrees in Music. Interested students should consult with an MACC advisor about transfer opportunities.
Career Opportunities
Career opportunities in music exist across a variety of areas, including education, performance, business, healthcare, production, technology, publishing, and public media. Sample occupations include professional musician, songwriter, composer, director, educator, music therapist, music journalist, and audio engineer.
The Music Department offers courses ranging from introductory courses for the non-music major to specialized training for those wishing to pursue a career or personal interest in music. Music lecture courses are offered in a variety of delivery formats, including traditional, hybrid, and online.
Instrumental/Vocal Instruction: Individualized private study as well as group instruction is provided through the MACC Music Department in vocal and piano skills. A music lab offers state-of-the-art equipment for the piano student.
MACC Singers: The MACC Singers is composed of approximately thirty students and community members. Participants audition for the choir and are selected on the basis of musicianship as well as singing ability. Singers meet during a regularly scheduled time and receive one-hour of college credit each semester. The MACC Singers perform public concerts at the College as well as perform in the surrounding community throughout the year.
