The first and only female Major League Baseball manager recently took the time to speak with the business students at MACC. Rachel Balkovec broke into major league baseball as a strength and training coach with the St. Louis Cardinals. She is now the manager of a New York Yankees minor league team.
Rachel overcame many obstacles to get to this point in her life including creating a gender-neutral resume. When asked about how to overcome obstacles in the workplace, even when the workplace is sports, the students heard a common theme that they have been hearing over and over this semester. That is the power of networking. She immediately reinforced another thing that the students hear over and over in the classroom, and that is the value of internships. Rachel said the best way to outwork the competition and achieve a higher level is through internships.
Rachel stated marketing yourself is vital. Represent yourself well, communicate that, and continue to build your network. Business is about people. Rachel sold this throughout her interview. She has shared her story with NPR, the Today Show, ESPN, and CBS, and now MACC. The time spent for the benefit of MACC business students is appreciated.
