Removing Old Files from Your Home Directory on CARS

Each time you run a process on the HP, there are output files deposited in your home directory. Those files are automatically removed after 30 days. However, there are other files that you may create that are clogging up your space on the HP. These must be manually removed. There are 2 ways to clean up your home directory on the CARS system--one is from the CARS Menu and the other is through the FTP program.

Make sure you only remove files that you have created. There are other files in your home directory that are necessary for mail and login access--do NOT delete these. Always view the file first before deletion.

From the CARS Menu

  1. Choose [U] - Utility Menu
  2. Choose [e] - File Options
  3. Choose [b] - List Files in Long Format
This lets you see every file in your home directory. Depending on how many files need to be deleted, you might want to write them down to remember them.
  4. Choose [i] - Remove a File
  5. Enter the filename(s) you wrote down from the last step, then hit Escape
If entering more than one filename, separate them with a comma

From the FTP Program

  • Open the FTP program and make sure the profile name is set to the hp9000.
  • Enter your user id and password (same as logging in to hp) and click OK
  • Find the file that you no longer need and click on it.The top right box lists any sub-directories you have created in your main home directory (those are the same as creating folders within My Documents) The bottom right box lists all individual files in your directory
  • Click on "View" to look at the file first. It is always a good idea to make sure you are deleting the intended file.
  • Click on "Delete" to remove the file. A box will appear to "Verify Deletion", click yes to delete.
  • Click "Exit" to quit the FTP program when you have finished removing all the files you don't need.
