Rachel Brown

Bio:

Brown Rachel Brown is a full-time artist based out of Brooklyn, NY. Her work is inspired by her love of animals and travel.

Rachel was raised on a farm outside of Glasgow, Missouri, and hails from a long line of creative women. Her mother, Penny Brown, began teaching her the fundamentals at a very young age. She was her art teacher from kindergarten through senior year of high school. Her grandmother was a folk painter, and taught Rachel color theory and her dairy farmer's wife work ethic. Along with undergrad work at the University of Missouri, Rachel received training in Contemporary Realist Portraiture at Studio Incamminati, in Philadelphia, PA and has participated in various artist residencies, including a month long painting residency in New Delhi, India.

In 2015 Rachel collaborated with Studio Collective Design to create over 200 pieces of original art for The Landsby Hotel in Solvang, CA. Her work lives in collections in London, Paris, Denmark, Dubai, and Japan. Some of her most notable collectors include Hilary Duff, Mr. Brainwash, Stephen Baldwin, and Julia Roberts.

Using watercolor, pigment inks and charcoal, Rachel strives to capture the spirit of whimsy and playfulness of each animal subject with simple gestures and minimal strokes.

Penny Brown

Bio:

I am an artist and former art teacher, I received both my undergraduate and master’s degree from the University of Missouri. I taught art for 39 years at Glasgow High School and New Franklin Elementary.

As a teacher and artist, I was able to inspire many of my students to pursue careers in art. Former students are working in graphic design, interior design, jewelry design, sculptors, art teachers, puppet and theatre design, wallpaper design, museum curators, and painters.

I have been painting with watercolors ever since I took my first painting class with Artist and Professor Frank Stack at the University of Missouri. I fell in love with this medium and love to contrast its transparency with a more opaque application to achieve depth in my paintings. A richness in color and texture is developed through many layers of watercolor.

My style is realism. My subject matter is often landscapes of the rural scenery from this area and places I have visited.

I am a member of the Missouri Watercolor Society, and have received several awards at the MWCS Member’s National Exhibit. I received awards at the Missouri Art Educators Association at the State and National level. My paintings were displayed in The “Three Tall Women” Exhibit and “Under The Influence” which was a show featuring my work and the work of my former students at the Ashby Hodge Gallery of American Art at CMU.

My work is part of the permanent Ashby Hodge Collection, and Preservation of the Arts collection in the Fayette Courthouse.

I’ve lived most of my life near Fayette Missouri, with my husband Pete and have two grown children, Cliff and Rachel. My husband and I enjoy outdoor adventures.

I have a “Blessed Life” and enjoy giving back in children’s camps, short term foreign mission trips, and teaching workshops. Penny Brown
