MACC-Columbia Student Receives DESE’s 2021 Breaking Traditions Regional Award

Moberly Area Community College – Columbia (MACC-Columbia) Practical Nursing (PN) student Toby Clark of Columbia, MO has been named the region #2 recipient of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) Breaking Traditions Award.

The Breaking Traditions Awards are sponsored by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to recognize outstanding non-traditional career and technical students and the adults who support them. 1

Upon completion of the practical nursing program, Mr. Clark plans to enroll in MACC’s Accelerated Associates Degree Nursing (AADN) program to further his degree and have the opportunity to work in the Critical Care Unit at MU Health Care. Eventually, Mr. Clark would like to become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) to administer anesthesia in various surgical situations.

MACC – Moberly Announces the Tom and Fern Swetnam Spring 2021 Scholarship Recipient

Moberly Area Community College – Moberly (MACC-Moberly) recently announced that Christi Lewis, a Columbia, MO resident and Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) student at MACC-Moberly, was the spring 2021 recipient of the Tom and Fern Swetnam Memorial Scholarship.

This memorial scholarship is offered twice per year, in the fall to a Practical Nursing (PN) student and the spring to an Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) student. The award is for $500.00 and is awarded based on financial need, academic strength, grade point average (GPA), and clinical performance.

The Tom and Fern Swetnam Memorial Nurse Scholarship was established through a $10,000.00 bequest from the Estate of Tom and Fern Swetnam for the purpose of educating nurses at Moberly Area Community College.

This scholarship provides financial assistance and motivation to students seeking an Associate Degree in Nursing and/or a Practical Nursing Certificate at Moberly Area Community College. Graduates of MACC’s Associate Degree Nursing program practice as Registered Nurses.

MACC’s Veterinary Technology Program Receives MFA Oil Foundation Grant for Barn Project

MEXICO, MO – Moberly Area Community College’s (MACC) Veterinary Technology Program has been awarded a two-thousand-dollar grant from the MFA Oil Foundation for the Veterinary Technology Program’s barn construction project.

MACC’s Veterinary Technology Program will use the funds to construct a new barn at the MACC–Mexico campus. This will allow students to gain experience in providing veterinary care to live animals of a variety of species.

“The MACC Veterinary Technology program would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the MFA Oil Foundation for their generosity. These funds will be put towards our barn project, which includes a loafing shed and corral space that will be built on our Mexico campus. This space will be used for teaching production animal nursing techniques to the veterinary technology students,” says Stephanie Gilliam, Director of the Veterinary Technology program at MACC, “This space will allow us to teach handling and nursing skills with live animals, which is essential to the education of veterinary technicians.”

Additional funds are still needed in order to complete the remodel of the veterinary technology space at the MACC-Mexico campus. The 2-year Associate of Applied Science in Veterinary Technology program will see its first classes begin in the Fall of 2021. The degree program will prepare students to deliver the highest quality health care to a variety of animal species.
