Delta Epsilon Chi State Competition
Scott Taylor, sponsor of Moberly Area Community College’s Delta Epsilon Chi (DEC), took three teams to state DEC competition at Lake Ozark on February 21 and 22, 2008. MACC’s marketing organization students were very successful. Cyrus McCord, of Macon, and Brina Jones, of Macon took first place in the Business Law category; Brina Jones won first place in the Sales Representative category; Zachary McLeland and Troy Reger, both of Macon won first in the Sports and Entertainment Marketing category, and Levi Mills, of Centralia won third place in the Retail Management category and was a top five finisher on the Marketing Exam. The competition included teams from the University of Missouri-Columbia, William Woods University, Columbia College, and Lincoln University as well as several other Missouri colleges. MACC was the only two-year community college from Missouri competing. These wins qualify the MACC teams to compete at nationals in Atlanta Georgia, on April 12th – 16th, 2008.
To help cover the expense of attending these conferences, the students of DEC participate in various fundraisers. This year, the organization has been able to partner with the Moberly Area Chamber of Commerce for a mutually beneficial project. The Chamber is developing a new visitors and “new-comers” guide for the area. Debbie Miller, executive director said “This will be a quality publication that will promote Moberly and Randolph County in a very positive way. Students (DEC members) are helping with contacting area businesses.” DEC members are selling the advertising space inside the guide. In exchange for the students’ services, the Chamber has agreed to give a percentage of the ads sold, which could mean approximately $3000. This project is very positive for the students. It provides them with a “real-world” project and teaches the need for deadlines, the importance of professionalism and the art of communication. This project solidifies the marketing and management concepts taught within the walls of the classroom.
