Assessment in
the Associate of Science Degree

The Associate of Science degree provides students with the first two years of study toward a Bachelor of Science degree at either the University of Missouri-Rolla or the University of Missouri-Columbia. Students take basic courses common to most engineering disciplines and continue their studies in specialized areas (electrical, mechanical, civil, chemical, etc.) during their remaining years at UMR or UMC.

Since the Associate of Science degree is designed for the pre-engineering student who plans to transfer to the University of Missouri-Rolla or the University of Missouri-Columbia, the curriculum responds to the expectations of each institution, as outlined in the Model Program for Engineering Transfers developed in cooperation with UMR and the Coordinating Board for Higher Education, and the Engineering Transfer Program Guide developed in cooperation with UMC and the Coordinating Board for Higher Education. Thus, the chief indicator of student success is acceptance into the four-year degree program.

PROGRAM: Pre-engineering
DEGREE: Associate of Science

Program purpose:
To provide a transfer curriculum for engineering majors who intend to pursue a baccalaureate degree.

Transfer studies

Phone or mail follow-up is conducted to determine enrollment status.

All AS degree recipients gain admission to a baccalaureate degree program.
1) Routine curriculum review and revision by:
  • faculty
  • dean
2) Periodic program review and revision by:
  • faculty
  • dean
3) Results are reported in the Assessment Committee "Annual Report."
2. successfully complete a baccalaureate degree
Transfer studies Phone or mail follow-up is conducted to determine completion status. At least 80% of AS degree completers earn a baccalaureate degree.
3. demonstrate proficiency in the core general education curriculum including reading, writing, mathematics, critical thinking and science reasoning
Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency (CAAP) The CAAP test is administered by Student Services personnel to students in selected general education courses. Scores provided by ACT are reported to the faculty by the Institutional Research Office. At least 80% of students who take the exam exceed the national norm on 3 out of the 5 sub-tests.
