Moberly Area Community College, the Rollins Street Neighborhood Association and the Moberly Area Council on the Arts are jointly sponsoring Art on the Block on Saturday, June 12, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., rain or shine. Activities will take place in the 100 block of Rollins Street and along College Avenue in front of the Main Building of MACC.
This event will give attendees the opportunity to either observe or participate in a variety of interactive arts activities. Professional artists will be creating sidewalk chalk drawings throughout the day, and designated areas will also be available for people of all ages to create their own sidewalk chalk renderings and compete for prizes. Chalk will be provided for all participants. Winners will be selected in the following categories: Home-Grown Graffiti, Clearly Classic, Funky Fab, People’s Choice, and Judge’s Choice. A Grand Prize winner will be able to select from prizes including an Art Party, an Art piece, or a free MACC fine arts class.
Other hands-on activities include creating a community poetry wall, exploring percussion instruments, making rain-sticks, creating recycled art sculptures and tape sculptures, making silk-screens, creating graffiti art, working with clay, and tie-dying t-shirts. Music, food, clowns, and magicians will add to the enjoyment. Additionally, the Graphic Arts/Fine Arts Gallery will have an exhibit highlighting the work of MACC’s art faculty. This event is free and open to the public. All activities are free with the exception of a nominal charge for the tie-dye t-shirts.
Art on the Block will be a festive, kid-friendly event, but people of all ages will enjoy the colorful and creative activities. The Little Toot train will be offering rides starting at noon to and from the event from Railroad Days activities also taking place on June 12.
Description of Activities:
Come draw with us! We’ll provide the chalk; you provide the imagination. Winners will be selected in the following categories: Home-Grown Graffiti, Clearly Classic, Funky Fab, People’s Choice, and Judges’ Choice. Vote for your favorite drawing at the registration booth. If drawing isn’t your thing, then simply enjoy watching artists create colorful masterpieces right under your feet.
One person’s trash is another person’s treasure! Watch our local artist, Amy Weimer, create art from trash, or come select from our various materials and design your own piece of recycled art.
It’s a sticky situation at this booth! Local artist Andrew Glenn will show you how to create tape sculptures. This fun activity involves wrapping yourself in packing tape.
This is totally legal! And, yes, it is ART! Add your own graffiti to our beat-up pickup truck. (Parents, please help supervise your young graffiti artists at work.)
You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear….but you can make something cool with this silk screening activity. And you’ll end up with a souvenir of your own making.
The wheels are in motion for a great time here! Watch local artist Fergus Moore demonstrate the pottery wheel. Or, sculpt your own piece using our clay. You can leave your piece, and we will fire it in our kiln. Then, you can pick it up at a later date and have a unique, self-made keepsake from Art on the Block.
Visit our beautiful Gallery and view the Art Exhibit by MACC Art Faculty.
This is a humdinger! Simply hum a tune into the kazoo, and you're an expert. Kazoos can be played solo or in groups so make a kazoo, form a band, and create a hit.
Rain, rain, go away…..but we hope you’ll stay! Kids will enjoy creating their very own rain sticks at this booth.
A little pickin’ n grinnin’ is going on here. He’s played the Grand Ole Opry, and now he’s delighting local crowds. Enjoy the banjo playing of Lonnie Garrison.
Having performed across the country with her musical family, Alisha Maples is now at home demonstrating her talent with the violin. This strolling violinist adds her melody to the creative energy of the day.
We got the beat! Arnold Music will demonstrate percussion instruments. Test out your own rhythm.
Put on a happy face! Give your face a little something extra for Art on the Block.
