MACC Singers Present Holiday Concert

12/5/2016

December 9, 7:00pm

The MACC Singers will present their Holiday Concert on Friday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. in the MACC Auditorium. The choir under the direction of Karen Werner, Associate Professor of Music, will feature both familiar and newly composed Holiday music. Jean Harvey of Salisbury, Missouri will serve as piano accompanist to the choir.

The choir will begin in the audience performing familiar Holiday songs and continue with a Kyrie from the “Missa Secunda” by the Renaissance composer Hans Leo Hassler. The newly composed Ubi Caritas (Where Charity and Love Are) by Ola Gjeilo will also feature a Latin text.

Two rhythmical arrangements of familiar Christmas carols will be performed with the In Dulci Jubilo arranged by Michael Touchi and God Rest You Merry, Gentlemen arranged by Philip Kern. Ms. Harvey will be featured on the piano of these joyous selections. She will also accompany the reflective Thy Little Ones, an arrangement of a traditional shape-note hymn from the American songbook known as “Southern Harmony”.

The familiar Norman Luboff arrangement of the Austrian carol Still, Still, Still and the Irish carol The Holly She Bears a Berry arranged by James Clemens will delight the audience with their wonderful harmonies. Of course, no Holiday is complete without hearing the very familiar Carol of the Bells.

Three voice students under the direction of Jonean Ratliff, MACC Instructor of Voice, were selected to perform solos in the concert. Justin Wilson will sing Sweet Little Jesus Boy. Guzel Tuhbatullina and Jaime Clark will perform the well-known work He Shall Feed His Flock from George Frideric Handel’s “Messiah”.

The choir will conclude their concert with a popular a cappella arrangement of Silent Night. This arrangement was originally performed by the talented group Pentatonix who were discovered on the show “The Sing Off”. Following the concert there will be a reception of hot spiced cider and Holiday goodies in the newly renovated MACC Conference Room.

Tickets for the concert will be sold at the door. Adult tickets are $5.00. All students are free. All proceeds will go to the MACC Singers to help fund students in the Singers to attend music conferences and tours.
