2015 MLT Graduation
Moberly Area Community College hosted a graduation ceremony for the members of the seventh Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) class on Friday, July 31, 2015. The ceremony took place in the Jansen Auditorium at St. Mary's Hospital - Audrain, in Mexico, Missouri. The class included students from Mexico, Moberly, Kirksville, and Paris, MO.
The speaker for the graduation was Matthew Hayes, M.B.A., M.T. (ASCP), President and Owner of Brightstar Care. MACC administrators presented awards and diplomas. Ester Welch received the Academic Excellence Award for consistently demonstrating outstanding scholarly performance throughout the program coursework. Louise Shaw received a Griffin Family Foundation Scholarship, made possible by the late Anna Margaret Griffin.
All students benefited from the Missouri Health Wins grant initiative, which covered the cost of their tuition for one semester. This Department of Labor workforce development program provides training to veterans, low skilled, unemployed, and under employed to move into critical need healthcare positions.
An MLT professional provides testing and analysis of bodily fluids and tissue samples in a laboratory setting. The MLT program at MACC is held at the Advanced Technology Center in Mexico and can be completed within two years. Students complete general education and required program coursework the first year and then apply for admission into the program.
MLT courses in the fall and spring semesters include lectures two days per week and practical experiences on the other three. Aside from selected days in the student laboratory, students spend much of their time at clinical sites gaining extensive hands-on practice. The MLT coursework is offered in a hybrid format allowing for remote access to MLT lectures.
