College Provides Assistance with Financial Aid Forms

3/11/2015

ff 000smThe Financial Aid department at Moberly Area Community College is dedicating this Sunday, March 15, to helping area families prepare financial aid forms for the upcoming school year. The free event will be 2PM to 4PM in the Moberly Campus's Library/Learning Center and gives students and parents valuable assistance in filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).Current or potential students who need financial aid to cover their college tuition can take advantage of billions of dollars that the U.S. Department of Education makes available to students throughout the nation. Filling out the FAFAS is the first step in applying for federal financial aid and state programs. In addition, students participating on Sunday will have the chance to win local and state scholarships.

"The FAFSA process can seem very intimidating, but we're here to make it as easy as possible and provide the support our families need," said Amy Hager, MACC Director of Financial Aid. "For most students, the FAFSA only takes 30 minutes to complete, but it's very important because it gives students access to the financial aid programs available.

The deadline for state aid is April 1st. Applications that are submitted early allow families quicker access to financial aid information. According to Hager, knowing how much aid is available to a family can determine where the student applies for college.

Hager cautions applicants to stay away from websites that require money to complete the FAFSA forms. The process and forms are free. There is no charge for either when using the federal website at fafsa.gov.

On Sunday, families should bring their completed 2014 income tax returns, 2014 W-2 forms, and any statements of interest earned in 2014. Families who haven't completed their 2014 tax returns should bring their 2014 W-2 forms, 2013 tax forms and 2014 statements of interest earned.

For quicker filing, participants should apply for their student PIN and parent PIN at www.pin.ed.gov before arriving on Sunday.
