MACC International Students Visit State Capital

4/21/2014

More than 450 international students from 26 colleges and universities in Missouri recently gathered for International Education Day at the state capital in Jefferson City. Moberly Area Community College students Shemshat Durdyyeva and Merjen Nurberdiyeva, both from Turkmenistan, and Hui-Chen (Julie) Huang, from Taiwan, attended the event.

Michael Johnson, an Academic Advisor at the Moberly campus, accompanied the students. International Academic Advisor Elisa Facetti and Assistant Director Laura Mertens, both from the MACC-Columbia Higher Education Center, also participated as part of the event support team.

During the event, Durdyyeva and Nurberdiyeva met with Senator Brian Munzlinger and were invited to sit on floor of the Senate as honorary members for the day. A lunch at the Capital Plaza Hotel gave MACC students the opportunity to network with students from their own countries who were attending different schools. The students toured the dome of the Capital Building, met with Rep. Tim Remole in his office and toured the floor of the House of Representatives.

The event had a lasting impact on the students, giving them a larger view of American political culture.

"This was a dream come true for me," said Nurberdiyeva. "I always wanted to attend a conference or an event with lots of other international students. I got that, plus, I got to see how the government in Missouri works."

"Today has motivated me to study harder and to improve my English," said Durdyyeva.

Study Missouri, a consortium of over 40 Missouri colleges and universities who partner together to promote international study, sponsored the event. Each quarter, college advisors meet to discuss how to encourage international students to choose Missouri as an educational destination. There are currently over 50 international students attending MACC campuses or online.

"Our goal is to get the word out about Missouri schools and draw students from around world to our state," said Johnson.
