New Nursing Scholarship Established at MACC

Moberly Area Community College is pleased to announce the establishment of the Thelma Shaw Memorial Scholarship.

Shaw, a life-long nurse, served communities on the east coast for many years. Her family approached MACC about funding a nursing scholarship in her memory and they had very specific goals in mind.

"The unique and exciting part of this scholarship is the family's long-term vision for the success of the student. They wanted to make sure each recipient continued to grow professionally," said MACC President, Dr. Evelyn Jorgenson.

The Shaw Scholarship begins by benefiting one student each year in the Practical Nursing (PN) program. It provides 50% of fees, tuition, clinical fees, technology fees, and required textbooks for the length of the program.

Once award recipients complete the three semesters of coursework and graduate from the PN program, the scholarship follows them into the Accelerated Associate Degree in Nursing (AADN) program. As in the PN program, it pays for 50% of specified fees & textbooks. The student has the option to work as an LPN for several years before returning to school.

After completion of the AADN program, and passing rigorous state licensing exams, the graduate enters the workforce as a Registered Nurse (RN).

"The Shaw Scholarship is a great example of investment in a strong, local influence in our community," said Scott McGarvey, Director, Institutional Development and Alumni Services. "Our graduates stay close to home. They contribute both to the economic and physical well-being of our region."

The demand for RNs is enormous. According to the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center (MERIC), by 2018, Missouri will need over 21,000 RNs to handle the growth of statewide health care.

MACC is committed to meeting that need in central Missouri, consistently producing RN graduates who qualify for and receive state licensure. In 2012, 95% of MACC ADN graduates received job placement in their fields.

The 2012 recipient of the Thelma Shaw Memorial Scholarship is April Starks, of Higbee.
