BOB HOKE aka HOKE aka HOKEOUTSIDER

I was born in Dayton, Ohio. I am 67 years old. My family moved to France when I was 12 and we returned when I was 21. I have spent extended time or lived in many regions and cities in the US. I currently live in Hannibal Missouri, the boyhood home of Mark Twain, on the banks of the Mississippi River...the "Big Muddy!"

I am an iterant bohemian dumpster diving artist. I have made some type of art all my life! I paint on recycled/repurposed surfaces (wood, metal, tarpaper etc.) that I find at construction sites, teardowns and random dumpsters.

I have exhibited my art in many venues: Slotin Folk Fest, Atlanta GA, HooDoo Fest, Atlanta GA, House of Blues Folk Art Fest, Orlando FL, Kentuck Festival of the Arts, Tuscaloosa AL, Outsiders Outside, Harbert, MI, Day in the Country, Kentucky Folk Art Center, Morehead KY, Good Folkfest, Louisville KY.

I paint approximately 300 to 350 paintings per year.

I usually paint 6 to 9 paintings per week, all at the same time so I don't have to stare at a painting wondering what is next. I tend to compose on the spot reacting to each spontaneous moment from painting to painting. Each painting produces its individual feeling. I know I am going someplace but I'm now sure where. In my paintings color is the key. Color is the self-induced puzzle!

Sometimes I solve the puzzle.

    Artist Statement:

I first ventured into abstract art in the first grade when I chose a purple crayon to color a frog. It did not receive rave reviews; in fact, it earned me an "F". The concept of "realism" had totally escaped me. This trauma led me to a 20 year career as a registered nurse. After retiring, I was inspired to enter the abstract art world once again. I started painting abstracts about five years ago. I was inspired by emotions evoked by places and things in the "real" world and wanted to express them as I saw them. It's a different way of seeing—as though I "feel" what I see. There's a part of me that is always about going against the grain and being "different". I don't mind if I seem a bit strange—that's what makes each of us uniquely special.

      Artist Statement:

My goal is to produce beautiful paintings! I believe I have done that. I have been painting for the past four years. If I have enough time, I hope to produce many more beautiful paintings. I'm a self-taught artist, so it's taking a little longer than I thought. I hope to become much better.

Stephen Tabb is a local artist living in Higbee, MO.
